What a fun week of inshore fishing in the Naples and Marco island area. The weather has been stellar and the fishing has been red hot ! The best thing about fishing the backcountry is the variety of fish that can be caught on any giving day. The Snook bite has been picking up everyday and I have been targeting them on the outside islands and deep in the backcountry.
Live bait has also shown back up on the beaches and near shore wrecks. This bait has really kept my anglers rods bent all day long . Take the time to catch it and you will not be disappointed . If your looking for some great fish for the grill pompano will not disappoint. I have been catching them deep in the backcountry where the creeks dump into the bays on the falling tides . I like my 3/4in tube jigs(light brown in color) tipped with a fish bite strip to get them going . This week look for gulf waters to keep warming up and more snook to be roaming the shallows . Get out and enjoy this great weather ! C u on the water ! Capt. Tim Daugherty www.fishthesalt.com (239) 280-8138

Winter fishing is in full effect around the Naples and Marco island areas. We have had some strong cold fronts make there way down to south Fl and this has fired up our winter fishery. When our water drop into the 60s the sea trout make there way to the out side islands and inshore grass flats. My favorite way to target them is a 3in DOA paddle tail ( rootbeer or any natural color) on a 1/4oz tsunami jig head . These plastic baits have some sent already in them but I like to use a product called pro cure . It comes in a gel form so all you do is apply it to your soft plastic and it really helps to get more bites.
Another eazy way to fish in the winter months is using cut lady fish AKA chunks. This is a great way to use a fishes nose to find your bait that is placed in there path. Cut up your lady fish in 3in chunks and use a 3/0 circle hook with a 3ft peice if 30lb leader and that’s it . No weight just free lined! Cast that bait up tight to the mangroves and let it sit . This is all about allowing a passing fish to smell your bait and swim over for an eazy meal. This weeks warmer weather will surly get them on the feed ! See you on the water! Past weekend in the Naples and Marco island areas we hit some record cold temps ,with lows in the 30s. This definitely put a hold on the fishing for a few days but this also allowed our water temperatures to drop & our winter species to fire up . The spotted sea trout has always been a go to when the water gets chilly . You can find them on the outside islands and deep in the back country around the river mouths and creeks. I like to target them with jigs(gulps , DOAs) on a 3/4oz jig head.
Sheep head is another cool water fish That can be found in the back country and on the nearshore Wrecks. A 1/2 Piece of shrimp & a half ounce lead sent to the bottom almost definitely get you rod bent . Now that we are on A warming trend look for Snook and redfish to start moving around the middle islands in the deep back country creeks. When the gulf water clean up you can still find live bait around the beaches and on the offshore ruble piles . Get outside and enjoy this great weather! C u on the water! Capt.
